GLOSSARY
Qibla
The Qibla is the direction of the Kaaba in Makkah. On a round Earth, it is the direction of the shortest path to the Kaaba, measured as an angle clockwise from true north.
Please note. This is educational reading, not a fatwa. It explains and shows its sources; it does not give a ruling or religious advice. For what is required or permitted in your own situation, ask a qualified scholar.
The angle is worked out from a spherical triangle between your position, the Kaaba and the North Pole. The worked formula and a table of Qibla bearings for major cities are on the Qibla page.
