GLOSSARY
Ḥamd
Ḥamd is the Arabic word usually translated as “praise”. It is the first word of Qur’an 1:2 and comes from the root ḥ-m-d.
Please note. This is educational reading, not a fatwa. It explains and shows its sources; it does not give a ruling or religious advice. For what is required or permitted in your own situation, ask a qualified scholar.
The word opens Qur’an 1:2, and the same root begins other surahs. Read how it sits at the start of the Fatiha in Al-ḥamd: reading the first word of the Fatiha closely.
Praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds.
